Note | 1943 | Phillip, who grew up in South Dakota, was a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps and a pilot. He was killed in a military plane crash in the Mojave Desert CA in the summer of 1943. There is now a South Dakota World War II Memorial, and information about it is online at http://www.sdwwiimemorial.com/. An individual entry for Phillip was paid for by Mary Coffin Giddings. She was located and contacted by Judy Geissler Russell, daughter of Phillip's cousin Hazel Irene Cottrell Geissler, in 2002, and explained: "my oldest brother, Roy, and Phil were best friends. I was only 1 1/2 years old when Phil was killed but my mother and Abigail Cottrell [Phillip's mother] were good friends and I remember going with Mother to visit her. My brother Roger was killed in W.W.II in 1944 so they had a lot in common. I hadn't heard of any Cottrells in this area and I wanted Phil to be remembered so I included him when I listed my four brothers and one sister who had served in W.W.II. Roy was here for the dedication of the memorial (he is 81) last September. After all the ceremonies were over and no one claimed Phil's dog tags (hung on the crosses commemorating those killed in W.W.II), Roy took them home with him to Mayville, North Dakota." Mary Giddings later sent a photograph and a copy of the profile to be included in the South Dakota Memorial: "In Memory of Marine Lieutenant Philip Ellsworth Cottrell Trail City, South Dakota Dewey County April 16, 1920 - August 4, 1943 Killed in Training Accident in Mojave, California Philip Cottrell was born on April 16, 1920, to Abigail and John Cottrell [Clay's brother] of Trail City, Dewey County, South Dakota. Philip was enrolled at Black Hills Teachers College for a time and was subsequently appointed to Annapolis by Rep. Francis Case in 1941. Cottrell attended Annapolis for a time and then transferred to the Marine Corps aviation branch; he had earned his wings and commission in May of 1943 at Corpus Christi, Texas. Additionally, Philip was at one time the South Dakota Golden Gloves boxing champion. Lt. Cottrell was killed during a training accident while piloting a tow plane near Mohave, California. The local newspaper wrote, "According to Lieut. James Seay, [his roommate], no one saw the tragic accident, hence details concerning it are not clear. The squadron had gone up about 2:30 p.m. to get in a couple hours of target practice. Phil was piloting the tow plane. When he attempted to let out the long target sleeve, it became entangled and wouldn't unfold. Having no target to shoot at, the squadron decided to go back to the base. Phil was to pull in the "sleeve" and follow them in. Apparently, the target was blown against the side of the engine as Phil was hauling it toward the cockpit, and it became ignited. His plane afire, Lt. Cottrell had no choice but to jump. It is believed the fuselage of the plane struck him on the head as he leaped. He never pulled the ripcord." After ten hours of searching, Lt. Cottrell's body was found "on the side of a mountain, seven miles from his shattered plane." His remains were returned to South Dakota, accompanied by Lt. Seay, and he was buried with military honors in the Greenwood Cemetery. Philip Cottrell gave his life to bring an end to WWII, and was noted as being well-liked and highly respected. At the time of his death he was survived by his parents and a half sister Mattie. This entry was respectfully submitted by Crystal Bachman, Junior, Cheyenne-Eagle Butte High School, Eagle Butte, SD. Information for this entry was provided by an application for a SD veteran's bonus payment and by newspaper clippings." |
Death | 4 Aug 1943 | He died on 4 Aug 1943 at Mojave Desert, Kern County, CA, at age 23. Philip was killed when the plane he was flying in a Marine Corps training mission crashed in the Mojave Desert and his parachute either failed to deploy or became entangled in the airplane itself.
