Matthew Johnson

M, b. circa 1813, d. between 1863 and 1864
Birthc 1813 Matthew Johnson was born c 1813 at VA. One family source identified Mathew's father as Samuel Johnson. There is as yet no substantiation for that information.
Occupation He was Matthew Johnson was a shoemaker.
Marriage18 Aug 1839 He married Mary "Polly" Fore, daughter of Jesse Fore and Nancy C. [--Davis?--] Fore, on 18 Aug 1839 at Union County, GA. Keith Townson, former Union County GA Rootsweb Coordinator, found a very small book "Union County GA Marriages" in the Rome-Floyd Library in Rome, GA. It had no publisher or copyright information, nor was there any information about the person who gathered the data and put it into book form. In that book, there was a record of a marriage of Mathew Johnson and Mary "Poore" in 1839. A copy of the certificate, No. 253, provided by the Union County Probate Court, identifies the day of the marriage as the 18th, but does not identify the month. However, the immediately following certificate, No. 254, is dated 19 Aug 1839, so August is most likely correct.
1840 Census1840 Matthew Johnson was listed as head of a household on the 1840 U.S.census of Union County, GA. Based on age and gender, his household could have included his wife Mary "Polly" Fore, his daughter Sarah (female under age 5). Enumerated in the next entry on the same census page was the family of Polly's father, Jesse Fore.
1850 Census19 Jul 1850 Matthew Johnson and Mary "Polly" Fore Johnson appeared on the 1850 U.S. census of Somerset, Pulaski County, KY, at Division No. 1 enumerated 19 Jul 1850. Matthew was shown as a 37-year-old shoemaker, born VA; Mary was shown as age 32, born GA. Their children Sarah, Napoleon B., Louisa and James were listed as living with them. The oldest three children -- Sarah, 9, Napoleon, 7, and Louisa, 5 -- were shown as born GA; the youngest, James, age 1, was shown as born KY. Only Napoleon was shown as attending school.
1860 Census1 Jun 1860 Matthew Johnson and Mary "Polly" Fore appeared on the 1860 U.S. census of District 1, Somerset, Pulaski County, KY, enumerated 1 Jun 1860. Matthew was shown as a 46-year-old shoemaker, born VA; Mary (Polly) as 39, born NC. Their children Napoleon B., Louisa, James, William F. P., Mary Perkins, Martha H. "Mattie" and Penelope Bertrand were listed as living with them. The older two children (Napoleon, shown as a 17-year-old clerk, and Louisa shown as age 13) were born GA; the others -- James K., 9; William, 7; Mary, 5; Martha, 3; and Nelly, 1, were all shown as born KY.
Deathbt 1863 - 1864 Matthew Johnson died bt 1863 - 1864 at Pulaski County, KY. Matthew was recorded as a taxpayer in Pulaski County in 1863 but Mary was recorded in 1864. This change places in doubt one family theory that he might have been killed during the Civil War around 1862 when heavy fighting occurred in the area of Pulaski County KY.

F, b. circa 1861
Note  Mildred Pittman's notes say Bill and Victoria Robertson had 3 daughters and 1 son, Willie. The notes also say Victoria put soap on the train tracks at Memphis (TX?) "to stop the train."
Birthc 1861 Louisa Victoria [--M?--] Robertson was born c 1861 at MO.
Marriageb 1879 She married William M. Robertson, son of Gustavus Boone Robertson and Isabella Gentry, b 1879. The marriage date is extrapolated from the 1880 census, where William and wife Louisa Victoria are shown with their baby Lulu, age 1.
1880 Census18 Jun 1880 Louisa Victoria [--M?--] Robertson and William M. Robertson appeared on the 1880 U.S. census of Delta County, TX, enumerated 18 Jun 1880. William was shown as a 32-year-old farmer, born MS; Louisa was age 19, born MO. Their daughter Lulu B. was listed as living with them. Lulu was shown as age 1, born TX.

Note  From the Journal of Gentry Genealogy, Vol. 2, No. 5: "Elijah appears to be the youngest of the sons of David and Sarah Gentry. He joined his brothers in serving in the South Carolina militia during the Revolutionary War, but then the next reference to him comes in Georgia, not South Carolina. Like Elisha, his name appears occasionally in early Georgia records that predate census and other records, continuing until perhaps 1802 (later references to an Elijah Gentry in Georgia probably were to Elisha's son). We have no further knowledge of him until 1818, when Elijah's son, James, was named executor of Elijah's will in Monroe County, in the newly formed state of Mississippi. From this will, and later court and census records, we learn that Elijah had children that included James, Simon and Sarah who were all born in South Carolina, and at least two sons, Elijah Jr., and Josiah who were born in Georgia. In a later divorce proceeding involving Simon, Elijah's widow is identified as being Hannah Gentry."

Note1799  According to William C. Stewart, "Gone to Georgia, Jackson and Gwinnett Counties and their Neighbors in the Western Migration", National Genealogical Society, 1965, p.281, on 4 Aug 1799 Elijah Gentry was appointed a justice of the peace. Other sources indicate he was appointed constable TO a justice of the peace, not justice of the peace himself. Jackson County is more likely a location than Wilkes by 1799.
Note1799  Elijah Gentry was recorded on the tax roll in Jackson County GA.
Note1801  Elijah Gentry was recorded on the tax roll. Clarke County was created from Jackson County in 1801; until the original records are reviewed, the location will be shown as possibly either county. Note that there are no extant 1800 census records for Georgia; they were burned by the British during the War of 1812.
Note1802  Elijah Gentry was on the tax roll of Clarke County GA for 150 acres (Larry W. Parr, "Clark County Georgia Tax Digest", "Gentry Family Gazette & Genealogy Exchange", vol 2, p.54 (#10, Dec 1981), published by Richard H. Gentry, McLean, VA.).

Note that there are no 1810 Georgia census records to help determine when the Gentrys moved to what was then the Mississippi Territory; they were burned by the British during the War of 1812.
Note1813  He was on a list for taxable property with sons Simon and James.
Milit Svce1813 Elijah Gentry Sr. served in the 1 Regiment U.S. Volunteers in 1813. The unit was also called the 1 Regiment Mississippi Territorial Volunteers. He entered as a private, and was discharged as a private [Source: Genealogy.Com database, book, 'Mississippi Territory in the War of 1812,' by Eron Opha Rowland (p.179)]

Note that the Mississippi Territorial Volunteers are often called the "twelve-month volunteers"; their last engagement was at the Battle of Holy Ground in December 1813 and they were mustered out and returned to their homes shortly after that battle. The area where that battle was fought is now in Lowndes County, AL, and Lowndes County is right in the center of what was originally created as Monroe County AL (where Elijah Sr. died in 1818).

In the history of the 155th Infantry: "1st Detachment of Mississippi Volunteers (also known as Colonel F. L. (Claiborne's Regiment of Mississippi Territorial Militia, and as 1st Regiment Mississippi Territorial Volunteers) organized in late summer of 1812 by voluntary enrollment of men from various militia regiments; entered Federal service 6 September 1812; reorganized March-April 1813 as 1st Regiment United States Volunteers (1st Regiment Mississippi Territory Volunteers) a 12-month corps of Volunteers; released 27 April 1814 from Federal service."
MS Terr. Census1816 He was listed as head of a household on the 1816 Mississippi Territorial Census of Monroe County, MS Terr (later AL). He was shown as head of household with one male over age 21, two females over age 21, two males under age 21 and one female under age 21. Note however that none of the Gentrys are listed on the tax roll for Monroe County in 1816.. Based on gender, his household could have included.
Deathbt 17 Nov 1817 - 11 May 1818 He died bt 17 Nov 1817 - 11 May 1818 at Monroe County, AL Territory. James was named executor of Elijah's will on May 11, 1818 in Monroe County, AL. There is an earlier reference to "the petition of Elijah Gentry" in the court records of November 11, 1817. It is therefore most likely that Elijah died between November 11, 1817 and May 11, 1818.
