Nicholas Gentry
M, b. before 1665
Birth | b 1665 | Nicholas Gentry was born b 1665 at England. Nicholas's birthdate is purely a matter of estimate. He first appeared in Virginia records in 1680 as a colonial militiaman. Thus he could not have been younger than 15 (and probably a good deal older) in 1680 and could not have been born later than 1665. |
Note | bt 1680 - 1684 | The first reference to Nicholas Gentry is in the York County (Va.) Deeds, Order and Wills 1677-1685, volume 6, page 268: "It is the opinion of the Court and accordingly ordered that what wages is due Nicholas Gentry for being a soldier at Mattapony Garrison till June last be paid to Nicholas Sabrell by the forty wch Gentry serves for, and that Sabrell pay Gentry what wages is due him by and according to conditions made between them." The order was given at the November Court in 1680 and establishes that (a) Nicholas Gentry was in the colonies then, (b) he had served until June 1680 as a soldier in the Mattapony Garrison (probably colonial militia) and (c) he had some contractual relationship with Nicholas Sabrell, which may well have been an indentured servitude. The next known record is the 1684 patent for 300 acres in the vicinity of Totopotomoy's Creek in New Kent County (later Hanover County) by Samuel Gentry. The entry in the patent book is cited in Nell Marion Nugent's "Cavaliers and Pioneers: Abstracts of Virginia Land Patents and Grants. Vol. II (1666-1695)", page 282: "Samuell Gentrey, 300 acs., New Kent Co; S. side of York River; Betw. brs. of same and brs. of Tottapottamoys Cr., 21 Oct 1684, p. 405 (of Patent Book 7). Adj. Col. John Page, Esqr; Edward Houchin and Nicholas Gentrey. Trans. of 6 pers; John Morris, Francis Middleton, Hen. Tully, Elizabeth Ody, Mor. Gardner, 2." This record establishes that Nicholas Gentry held land in New Kent County adjacent to that of Samuel Gentry (believed to be his brother, but there is no documentary evidence of that). |

Birth | b 1720 | Sarah Brooks, daughter of Richard Brooks and Elizabeth [--M?--] Brooks, was born b 1720. That Richard Brooks was Sarah's father is established by a deed: In 1743, Louisa Co. VA will book A, p.75: Richard Brooks deeds land to David Gentry and "Sarah Gentry, my daughter". Richard's wife was Elizabeth __?__, as listed in a number of VA deeds. |
Marriage | c 1734 | Sarah Brooks married David Gentry, son of Samuel Gentry and Ann Allen, c 1734 at Louisa County, VA. |
Residence | 1766 | In 1766, Sarah Brooks lived at Edgefield County, SC. Area was called Colleton County at time of land grant Brent H. Birth | 1810 | Josiah Gentry, son of James Gentry, was born in 1810 at GA or MS. Note that, although some family histories suggest that Josiah is a son to Elijah Sr., and thus brother to Elijah, Jr., it is far more likely that he was Elijah Sr.'s grandson, a son of Elijah Sr.'s son James. Note the fact that Josiah named his first son James, and the common family naming pattern at the time was to name the first son for the father's father. This possibility is bolstered by the fact that Elijah Sr. made no reference to Josiah in his will in 1817, when Josiah was still clearly a minor, while specifically directing James to care for his mother. |
1820 Census | 1820 | Josiah Gentry appeared on the 1820 U.S. census of Wayne County, MS, in the household of Elijah Gentry. Although his exact relationship to Elijah Gentry is yet unknown, it is likely that Josiah was a nephew (son of Elijah's brother James) rather than a brother as previously thought. |
1830 Census | 1830 | Based on age and gender, Josiah Gentry likely appeared on the 1830 Census of L in the household of Elijah Gentry. Most likely, he was Elijah's nephew, son of his brother James, and not a brother as previously thought. |
Marriage | 17 Nov 1833 | Josiah Gentry married Keziah or Kissiah Steele on 17 Nov 1833 at Rankin County, MS. |
1850 Census | 21 Sep 1850 | Josiah Gentry and Keziah Steele Gentry appeared on the 1850 U.S. census of Smith County, MS enumerated 21 Sep 1850. Josiah was shown as a 40-year-old farmer born GA. Keziah was shown as age 45, born SC. Their children James, John, Catherine, Barberry, Alfred and Josiah were listed as living with them. The children -- James, 13, John, 10, Catherine, 7, Barberry, 6, Alfred, 4, and Josiah, 2 -- were all shown as born MS. The older three were attending school. |

Birth | c 1818 | Mary "Polly" Fore, daughter of Jesse Fore and Nancy C. [--Davis?--] Fore, was born c 1818 at prob NC. The 1850 Pulaski County KY census showed Mary as 32, or birthyear around 1818; 1860 Pulaski County KY census showed Mary as 39, or a birthyear around 1820-21; the 1870 Parker County census indicated an age of 55, or a date of birth around 1815. Because of the dates of birth of other children, 1818 is a reasonable theory. |
1830 Census | 1830 | Based on age and gender, Mary "Polly" Fore was probably included as a free white female, age 10-15, in the household of her father, Jesse Fore, on the 1830 U.S. census of Buncombe County, NC. |
Marriage | 18 Aug 1839 | Mary "Polly" Fore married Matthew Johnson on 18 Aug 1839 at Union County, GA. Keith Townson, former Union County GA Rootsweb Coordinator, found a very small book "Union County GA Marriages" in the Rome-Floyd Library in Rome, GA. It had no publisher or copyright information, nor was there any information about the person who gathered the data and put it into book form. In that book, there was a record of a marriage of Mathew Johnson and Mary "Poore" in 1839. A copy of the certificate, No. 253, provided by the Union County Probate Court, identifies the day of the marriage as the 18th, but does not identify the month. However, the immediately following certificate, No. 254, is dated 19 Aug 1839, so August is most likely correct. |
1840 Census | 1840 | Mary "Polly" Fore was probably included as a free white female in the household of her husband, Matthew Johnson, on the 1840 U.S. census of Union County, GA. |
1850 Census | 19 Jul 1850 | Mary "Polly" Fore Johnson and Matthew Johnson appeared on the 1850 U.S. census of Somerset, Pulaski County, KY, at Division No. 1, enumerated 19 Jul 1850. Matthew was shown as a 37-year-old shoemaker, born VA; Mary was shown as age 32, born GA. Their children Sarah, Napoleon B., Louisa and James were listed as living with them. The oldest three children -- Sarah, 9, Napoleon, 7, and Louisa, 5 -- were shown as born GA; the youngest, James, age 1, was shown as born KY. Only Napoleon was shown as attending school. |
1860 Census | 1 Jun 1860 | Mary "Polly" Fore and Matthew Johnson appeared on the 1860 U.S. census of District 1, Somerset, Pulaski County, KY, enumerated 1 Jun 1860. Matthew was shown as a 46-year-old shoemaker, born VA; Mary (Polly) as 39, born NC. Their children Napoleon B., Louisa, James, William F. P., Mary Perkins, Martha H. "Mattie" and Penelope Bertrand were listed as living with them. The older two children (Napoleon, shown as a 17-year-old clerk, and Louisa shown as age 13) were born GA; the others -- James K., 9; William, 7; Mary, 5; Martha, 3; and Nelly, 1, were all shown as born KY. |
1870 Census | 28 Aug 1870 | Mary "Polly" Fore Johnson appeared on the 1870 U.S. census of Parker County, TX, enumerated 28 Aug 1870. The family was in household 377. Mary was shown as age 55, born TN. Her children James, William F. P., Mary Perkins and Martha H. "Mattie" were listed as living with her. James was shown as age 19, born GA; William (W.D.) as 17, born KY; Mary as 24 (she was 14), born KY; and Martha (Mattie) as 12, born KY. Next door in household 376 was Napoleon B. Johnson with his wife Sarah and one-year-old son Francis. |
