Jesse Fore
M, b. circa 1787
Birth | c 1787 | Jesse Fore was born c 1787 at prob SC. There are two competing theories as to the parentage of Jesse Fore. One theory -- from family history -- is that he was the son of a Frenchman Jean Faure who came to America during the Revolution and stayed. The other, constructed mostly from similarities of location and name, is that he was descended from one of four Faure children who came with their mother during a Huguenot migration. More research is required to determine if either theory can be substantiated. However, as of 2009, a documented descendant of Jesse Fore was DNA-tested and matches others with likely (though not air-tight) paper trails to the Huguenot Faure brothers of Manakin Town, Virginia. Research should thus be focused on that likelihood. |
Milit Svce | bt 1 Oct 1814 - 7 Mar 1815 | He served in the South Carolina Militia bt 1 Oct 1814 - 7 Mar 1815. According to various bounty land and pension applications filed by Jesse Fore between 1851 and 1872, he served as a fifer in the company of Captain Michael Gaffney, South Carolina Militia, in the War of 1812. He was issued a warrant for bounty land, which he sold, and ultimately received a pension as well. |
Marriage | c 1815 | He married Nancy C. [--Davis?--] Fore c 1815. |
Note | In addition to the seven generally recognized children of Jesse and Nancy Fore, another child, Myra, is identified by Martha A. "Mattie" Fore Gough (daughter of George W. Fore). No records as to her life have yet been found. | |
1830 Census | 1830 | Jesse Fore was listed as head of a household on the 1830 U.S. census census of Buncombe County, NC. Based on age and gender, his household could have included his wife Nancy C. [--Davis?--] Fore, his sons William Manson and Arch (males under age 5), his son George Washington (male age 5-10), his sons Jesse R. and Joseph (males age 10-15), his daughter Nancy Catherine "Kate" (female age 5-10), his daughter Mary "Polly" (female age 10-15). |
1840 Census | 1840 | Jesse Fore was listed as head of a household on the 1840 U.S.census of Union County, GA. Based on age and gender, his household could have included his wife Nancy C. [--Davis?--] Fore, his son William Manson (male age 10-15), his sons Arch and George Washington (males age 15-20), his daughter Nancy Catherine "Kate" (female age 15-20). Enumerated on the same census page, just above this entry, was the family of Mathew and Mary "Polly" Fore Johnson. |
1850 Census | 23 Jul 1850 | Jesse Fore and Nancy C. [--Davis?--] Fore appeared on the 1850 U.S. census of Pulaski County, KY, at Division 1 enumerated 23 Jul 1850. Jesse was shown as a 63-year-old farmer owning $500 in real estate, born SC. Nancy was shown as age 62, born NC. |
Note | a 1851 | The 1850 United States Census for Pulaski County KY sets out the last unquestioned record of the Jesse Fore who is certain to be the husband of Nancy Fore and father of (among others) Mary "Polly" Fore Johnson and Nancy "Kate" Fore Baker. It shows Jesse Fore, age 63, born SC, living with his wife Nancy, age 62, born NC. The problems begin with the filing, on January 4, 1851, of a bounty land application by a Jesse Fore (age 65) in Pulaski County KY. That same Jesse Fore made later similar filings in Union County GA on March 28, 1855 and November 4, 1857, and pension applications in Warren County KY in 1871 (age 82) and 1872. Although it is possible (however unlikely) that there were two Jesse Fores of roughly the same age in the same area of Kentucky in 1850, it appears far more likely that the Jesse making these applications and the Jesse who was the father of Polly and Kate were one and the same. (Among other things, Jesse made a reference in one pension application to an 1815 marriage in "Bunkum" (Buncombe) County NC, and one of Jesse's grandchildren noted that her grandfather had served in the War of 1812.) But then comes the twist: Polly and Kate's mother Nancy did not die until 1882 (in Parker County TX); the Jesse who filed for the bounty land and pension married (or remarried) in Georgia in 1855. If we assume that there was only one Jesse Fore, we must ask what happened in the early 1850s to break the family apart. We know for certain that Kate and her Baker family headed west in the early 1850s (first to Iowa, arriving around 1852, and then to Texas, arriving by 1854), and we know that Nancy ended up living with Kate as of the 1880 census. Did Nancy go west with the Baker westward migration? Perhaps, and Baker family lore would have it so, but that would have meant leaving many of her children behind: neither Polly nor Kate's twin George would go west until 1869; Jesse R. was still in Kentucky in 1860. Still, a decision on Nancy's part to accompany her daughter Kate on the Baker migration would go far to explaining how Jesse felt free to remarry by 1855. Abandonment is a traditional basis for divorce (though no record of such can be found). If we accept that the Jesse who filed the applications was Nancy's husband, then he remarried in June of 1855 in Union County, GA to a widow, Sarah King Garrett Nicks. They were in Bledsoe County TN in 1860 and Warren County KY in 1870. That Jesse died on July 16, 1872. |
