Birth5 Apr 1822 Josiah Alexander Baker, son of Martin Alexander Baker and Elizabeth Buchanan, was born on 5 Apr 1822 at prob Burke County, NC. Note that the 1830 Burke County census undercuts the family story that Josiah was born in Cherokee County NC as the family was still in Burke County in 1830, well after Josiah's birth.
1830 Census1830 Based on age and gender, Josiah Alexander Baker was probably included as a free white male, age 5-10, in the household of his father, Martin Alexander Baker, on the 1830 U.S. census of Burke County, NC. This census undercuts the family story that Josiah was born in Cherokee County NC, as the family is still in Burke County as of 1830.
1840 Census1840 Based on age and gender, Josiah Alexander Baker was probably included as a free white male, age 15-20, in the household of his father, Martin Alexander Baker, on the 1840 U.S. census of Cherokee County, NC.
Marriageb 1845 Josiah Alexander Baker married Nancy Catherine "Kate" Fore, daughter of Jesse Fore and Nancy C. [--Davis?--] Fore, b 1845 at prob KY. Josiah and Kate's oldest child was born in 1845. Their date of marriage therefore likely to have been 1844 or before.
1850 Census17 Aug 1850 Josiah Alexander Baker and Nancy "Kate" Fore Baker appeared on the 1850 U.S. census of Pulaski County, KY, at Division 2 enumerated 17 Aug 1850. Josiah was shown as a 29-year-old farmer, born NC; Kate was shown as 28, born TN. Their children Dulcena, George Washington and William Arch were listed as living with them. All of the children -- Dulcina, age 5, George W., age 2, William A., nine months -- were shown asl born KY. Nearby in household 109 was Josiah's brother William and his family.
Residence8 Dec 1857  On 8 Dec 1857, Josiah Alexander Baker lived at Long Creek, Parker County, TX. By this time, Josiah had been a resident of Parker County long enough to initiate a claim for 160 acres of land.
Milit Svce1864 He served in the Civil War in Company A, 1st Frontier District in 1864 at Parker County, TX. He enlisted at Weatherford, TX on Feb 1, 1864 and served for 30 days. The Frontier Districts were created to protect the settlers from Indian raids while so many of the men were serving in the Confederate Army. [Note that Weatherford was the headquarters for Company D, and it may have been in that unit that Baker served.]
1880 Census2 Jun 1880 He and Nancy "Kate" Fore Baker appeared on the 1880 U.S. census of Parker County, TX, at Justice Precincts 6 & 8, enumerated 2 Jun 1880. Josiah was shown as "Josiaha", a 57-year-old farmer, born NC; Kate was shown as "Cathern," age 57, born TN. Their children Leetta, Dulcena and Iva Ann were listed as living with them. Leeta was shown as "Lee," age 14, born TX. Dulcena Baker Robinson was shown as age 35, born KY. She had just been widowed and was shown with her daughter Laura, age 9, born TX. Iva Ann Baker Morrison was shown as Annie, age 23, born TX. Available records indicate she was also a widow; she was shown with her children Agnes, 6, and William 5, both born TX. Also enumerated with the family was Kate's mother Nancy Fore, shown as age 101, born SC. Enumerated nearby were the Bakers' son James in household 13, Josiah's uncle Charles in household 15, Josiah's sister Louisa in household 10, and Louisa's daughter Sarah Jane Henson in household 9.

Birth29 Jun 1819 David Davenport Baker, son of Martin Alexander Baker and Elizabeth Buchanan, was born on 29 Jun 1819 at NC.

1840 Census1840 David Davenport Baker was listed as head of a household on the 1840 U.S.census of Cherokee County, NC. Based on age and gender, his household could have included his wife Mary Baker, his son Thomas Martin (male under age 5).
1850 Census2 Sep 1850 David Davenport Baker and Mary Baker appeared on the 1850 U.S. census of Pulaski County, KY, at Division 2 enumerated 2 Sep 1850. David was shown as a 31-year-old farmer, born TN; Mary was shown as age 39. Their children William Harvey, John Flournoy, Martin Alexander, Susanah Elizabeth, Clarissa Katherine and Nancy Ellen were listed as living with them. The oldest four children -- William, 9; John (shown as Martin F.), 7; Martin (shown John A.), 5; and Susanah (shown as "Samuel"), 4 -- were shown as born TN. The youngest two -- Clarissa, 2; and Nancy, age nine months -- were shown as born KY. The census contains some interesting errors (the order and middle initials of Martin and John, making Susanah into a boy Samuel).
1852 Iowa Census1 Jul 1852 David Davenport Baker was listed as head of a household on the 1852 State Census of Columbus City, Louisa County, IA. As head of household containing five males and three females. The family's listing is directly above that of his parents' household, with head of household shown as Martin Baker. Based on gender, his household could have included.
1854 Iowa Census1 Jul 1854 He was listed as head of a household on the 1854 State Census of Columbus City, Louisa County, IA. He was shown as head of household with five males and four females. Birth21 Nov 1820 William Baker, son of Martin Alexander Baker and Elizabeth Buchanan, was born on 21 Nov 1820 at NC. Note that William's date of birth is uncertain. William's descendants report that a family Bible gives it as November 21, 1820. Elma Baker in "The Rugged Trail" gives it as November 11, 1820. However, the 1850 census shows him as 28 and younger than Josiah, who was born in 1822.
1830 Census1830 Based on age and gender, William Baker was probably included as a free white male, age 10-15, in the household of his father, Martin Alexander Baker, on the 1830 U.S. census of Burke County, NC.

Marriage1843 William Baker married Matilda Gullet in 1843 at prob NC. Date of marriage extrapolated from ages of children and from her obituary.
1850 Census17 Aug 1850 William Baker and Matilda Gullet Baker appeared on the 1850 U.S. census of Pulaski County, KY, at Division 2 enumerated 17 Aug 1850. William was shown as a 28-year-old farmer, born NC; Matilda was shown as age 27, born NC. Their children Julia E., Thomas Andrew, Louisa C., Lydia Dulcina and Josiah Leander were listed as living with them. All of the children -- Julia, age 6; Thomas, age 4; Louisa (shown as Eliza), age 3; Dulcina, age 2; and Leander, age six months -- were shown as born NC. Nearby in household 107 was William's brother Josiah and his family.
1852 Iowa Census1 Jul 1852 William Baker was listed as head of a household on the 1852 State Census of Columbus City, Louisa County, IA. Based on gender, his household could have included his wife Matilda Gullet Baker, his sons Thomas Andrew and Josiah Leander and his daughters Julia E., Louisa C. and Lydia Dulcina.
Deathbt Jul 1852 - 1853 William Baker died bt Jul 1852 - 1853 at Columbus City, Louisa County, IA. According to an email from Bruce Baker, great grandson of William Baker, dated October 7, 2003, William and Matilda Baker traveled from North Carolina to Iowa in the fall of 1852. (Other members of the Baker family -- Martin and son David -- were already in Iowa by the summer of 1852.) Bruce Baker reports: "William made it to Iowa but died there shortly after his arrival. He and his family traveled in the fall of 1852, and they got as far as Burlington, Iowa and the weather got bad. They had to ford flooded streams and leading the oxen through the water got Great Great dad soaked. With that William caught a bad cold. He later developed pneumonia and died as a result of that. He was buried some where in the Columbus Jct area. But no one that we could find knew where. I did make contact by mail with a distant cousin that shared a letter that was written in June 1965. In it she recalled her mother telling about the trip. Her mother was my Aunt Julia, she married a William Marsden. Their family stayed in the Columbus City area. Her letter told the story of their travels and how hard it was for them." His widow's obituary puts William's death a year after their arrival in Iowa (or 1853).

William's widow, Matilda, remarried on October 8, 1854 and she and her Baker children were living with her second husband (William Paschal) in Louisa County Iowa on the 1856 census and the 1860 federal census.

1830 Census1830 Based on age and gender, Charles Baker was probably included as a free white male, under age 5, in the household of his father, Martin Alexander Baker, on the 1830 U.S. census of Burke County, NC.

Note  There is no record of Charles Baker after the 1854 Iowa State Census, He cannot be found in Texas, where Martin, Josiah and Louisa migrated in 1854, nor did he accompany his brother David to Kansas. Elma Baker in "The Rugged Trail" states that Charles did go with his father, brother and sister to Texas and served as a Texas Ranger and as a postmaster -- none of this can be substantiated. (Note that "The Rugged Trail" is filled with errors: it also states, for example, that Charles' brother William went to Texas, when it is clear that William died before the family moved from Iowa to Texas.).

Birthc 1682 Martin Davenport Sr., son of Davis Davenport and wife of Davis Davenport, was born c 1682 at VA. most likely at Pamunkey Neck in King William County.
Notec 30 Mar 1704  Martin Davenport was on the 1704 Quit Rent Rolls list for King William County, assessed for 100 acres.
Marriageb 1706 Martin Davenport Sr. married First wife of Martin Davenport b 1706 at VA. It appears that Martin had at least two wives. For research purposes the first three children are ascribed to a first wife.
Marriageb 1716 Martin Davenport Sr. married Dorothy [Glover?] Davenport b 1716 at prob King William County, VA. Dorothy was likely a second wife and mother of only some of Martin's children. She may have been a Glover, and possibly a daughter of William and Mary Glover of King William County.
Residence8 Nov 1721  On 8 Nov 1721, Martin Davenport Sr. lived at St. Margaret's Parish, King William County, VA. Fragments of a lease and release executed by Martin Davenport identify his residence as of 1721. (Source: John Scott Davenport, 'The Pamunkey Davenport Chronicles').
Note24 Mar 1724  A survey of land at this time for one Captain Thomas Carr located that tract by reference to land of Martin Davenport along the North Anna River in Hanover County. That land wasn't patented to Davenport at the time but must have been surveyed and marked in order to be used as a benchmark for someone else's survey. (Source: John Scott Davenport's 'Pamunkey Davenport Chronicles').
Residence7 Feb 1726/27  On 7 Feb 1726/27, Martin Davenport Sr. lived at Hanover County, VA. Martin Davenport's patent for 400 acres along the south side of the North Anna River was issued. (Source: John Scott Davenport's 'Pamunkey Davenport Chronicles').
Will24 May 1735 He left a will on 24 May 1735 at St. Martin's Parish, Hanover County, VA. Martin Davenport executed his will in Hanover County. (Source: John Scott Davenport's 'Pamunkey Davenport Chronicles') The will only named five sons and did not leave property to all of them (several were contingent beneficiaries only). This strongly suggests that other arrangements had been made during Martin's lifetime for other older children and the children benefiting from the will were only his youngest.
Deathb 2 Oct 1735 He died b 2 Oct 1735 at Hanover County, VA. Martin's will was executed on May 24th 1735 and offered for probate on October 2 1735.

Note  Research into the descendants of William and Ann Gambill Baker is ongoing and has not been fully verified as yet. Nonetheless, DNA evidence as of 2007 certainly establishes that Adam Jackson Baker is in fact descended from Thomas (and Dorothy Davenport) Baker through one of their sons; the circumstantial evidence is also strong that William is the most likely candidate.

Note  Richard's name appears in some accounts, particularly those relying on Elma Baker's The Rugged Trail as "Ruben" or "Rubin" or "Reuben." This is clearly incorrect. David Baker's pension application, in which he names the brother who died at the Battle of Trenton, quite clearly identifies that brother as Richard. The handwriting may be misunderstood by those unfamiliar with early script; however, the last letter is without question a "D".
Birth23 Dec 1753 Richard Baker, son of Thomas Baker and Dorothy Davenport, was born on 23 Dec 1753 at Culpeper County, VA.
Death26 Dec 1776 Richard Baker died on 26 Dec 1776 at Trenton, Hunterdon (now Mercer) County, NJ, at age 23. According to the pension application of his brother, David Baker, Richard was killed at the Battle of Trenton. David stated in his pension application: “I had a brother by the name of Richard killed in that action.” Richard Baker was just three days past his 23rd birthday. Particularly tragic is the fact that few if any American soldiers died due to enemy fire in the engagement. According to David McCullough in his masterful 1776 (Simon & Schuster, 2005), no American troops died in the fighting, but two froze to death in the terrible winter conditions. If true, then Richard Baker was one of those two. But other sources do not accept the no-battle-casualties conclusion. In Rebels & Redcoats by George F. Scheer and Hugh F. Rankin (Da Capo Press, copyright 1957, paperback reprint), the authors quote a relatively contemporaneous account attributed to an aide to General George Washington, probably Col. John Fitzgerald, as stating that there were “two killed and three wounded” and the wounded included Captain William Washington and Lieutenant James Monroe – both assigned to the 3rd Virginia Regiment, the regiment in which David Baker did serve and in which Richard Baker most likely served (there are no extant records to establish for certain Richard’s regiment). David Hackett Fischer, author of Washington’s Crossing (Oxford University Press, 2004), cites a similar count by Washington aide Tench Tilghman and contends that the bulk of the evidence supports a finding that two privates were killed in action and another four or five died of illness or exposure. If these other sources are correct, then David Baker’s choice of the word “killed” to describe his brother’s death (as opposed to a more passive word such as “died”) would suggest that Richard was one of those killed in action.
