Birth Nancy Menefee was born at prob Culpeper County, VA. Nancy is often identified in family histories as the daughter of Jonas and Elizabeth [Chew] Menefee. Support for that theory appears to come solely from the fact that she and her husband Henry Baker witnessed the will of Jonas Menefee in Culpeper County on 23 February 1779; the will was admitted to probate on 18 November 1782. Culpeper County (VA) Will Book B/C:533-534 [Library of Virginia, Richmond]. However, under Virginia practice at the time, a legatee was disfavored as a witness to a will, and Jonas’ will left his estate to his wife Elizabeth for her lifetime and then to his children in equal shares. Thus, Nancy – a witness to Jonas’ will – was not likely to have been one of Jonas’ children. A far more likely candidate for Nancy’s father was Jonas’ brother John Menefee (wife: Mary James), who died in 1765, leaving several minor children including a daughter “Nansey” and a daughter “Basheba” who were both under the age of 18 at the time. Culpeper County (VA) Will Book A:97 [Library of Virginia, Richmond]. Henry and Nancy Baker named their first son John Menefee Baker, their first daughter Mary and a younger daughter Basheba. 
Marriageb 1777 She married Henry Baker, son of Thomas Baker and Dorothy Davenport, b 1777 at Culpeper County, VA. Henry and Nancy Baker served as witnesses to the will of Jonas Menafee, dated 23 February 1779 and probated 18 November 1782 in Culpeper County. Thus their marriage date had to be before that date.

Note5 Oct 1848  Nancy's estate was sold and the results of the sale were reported to the October term of the Caldwell County Court of Common Pleas and Quarter Sessions. Among the buyers were Polly Webb, R.R. Wakefield, Basheba Baker, Elizabeth Baker, Lucy Baker, Nancy White, and Mary Wakefield. The persons making the report were shown as Robert Wakefield and R.L. Baker, sons.
