Charley Emmett Harris
M, b. 1 October 1874, d. 6 January 1968
Note | Cladyne Cottrell Barret (daughter of Clay and Opal Robertson Cottrell) reports that she lived briefly with Emmett and Addie Harris: "Barrett's mother kept the children while Barrett and I lived with Aunt Addie and Uncle Emmet, looking for a rent house in the area while a new housing complex was being built for Sheppard Air force Base. Our visit was one of their high-lights in their older years for Barrett "fixed" everything in the house that was broken. Until his dying day, Emmett was still chuckling over a toaster, taken apart and repaired perfectly, only there was one piece left over...."
Birth | 1 Oct 1874 | Charley Emmett Harris was born on 1 Oct 1874 at Meers, Comanche County, OK. |
Marriage | 23 Dec 1897 | He married Addie Lee Cottrell, daughter of Martin Gilbert Cottrell and Martha H. "Mattie" Johnson, on 23 Dec 1897 at Wichita County, TX. Addie was underage to marry in Texas -- she was only 16 -- and had to have her mother's permission. The marriage license was issued Dec. 22, 1897 and the marriage performed on Dec. 23, 1897, by County Judge J. W. Barwise. |
1910 Census | 24 May 1910 | Charley Emmett Harris and Addie Cottrell Harris appeared on the 1910 U.S. census of Wichita County, TX, at Justice Precinct 2, enumerated 24 May 1910. Emmett (spelled Emmit in the census) was shown as a 35-year-old general farmer, born TX; Addie (shown as Eddie) was age 28, born TX. The census indicates that she was the mother of six, three surviving (only three children have ever been identified as born to this marriage). Their children Gilbert William, Sam Walter (Pete) and Mattie Lucille were listed as living with them. All three children -- Bill (called Willie), age 8; Pete (called Sammy), age 6; and Lucille, age 3 -- were shown as born TX. Bill and Pete had attended school within the prior year. |
1920 Census | 6 Feb 1920 | Charley Emmett Harris and Addie Cottrell Harris appeared on the 1920 U.S. census of Iowa Park, Wichita County, TX, enumerated 6 Feb 1920. "Emmit C." was shown as a 44-year-old teamster in general hauling, born TX; Addie was shown as 37, born TX. Their children Gilbert William, Sam Walter (Pete) and Mattie Lucille were listed as living with them. The children -- listed as "Willie", age 20, a salesman in a retail auto shop; Sam, age 18, a laborer in an express office, and Lucille, 13, a schoolgirl -- were all shown as born TX. Also enumerated with the family were two lodgers, Mallory Edwards, an 18-year-old laborer in an express office (possibly a co-worker of Pete's), and Sam Canter, 35, a teamster for a general hauling firm (possibly a co-worker of Emmett's). |
1930 Census | 12 Apr 1930 | Charley Emmett Harris and Addie Cottrell Harris appeared on the 1930 U.S. census of Iowa Park, Wichita County, TX, enumerated 12 Apr 1930. Emmett was shown as Charles E., age 55, a teamster in the general hauling business, born TX; Addie was age 48, married 32 years, born TX. Their son Sam Walter (Pete) was listed as living with them. George Washington Cottrell
M, b. 5 March 1821, d. 21 May 1891
Note | The identity of George Washington Cottrell's parents is, as yet, unknown. However, in 2009, DNA testing of a documented descendant of G.W. (his great grandson) produced a 37-for-37 marker match with a documented descendant of Richard Cottrell, d 16 Mar 1715 in St. Peters Parish, New Kent County, VA, through that Richard's son Richard, and a 25-for25 marker match with a documented descendant of that Richard through his son Thomas. Additional tests have been ordered to determine if DNA evidence will suggest that Richard or Thomas is the more likely of the original Richard's sons as an ancestor candidate. The testing is through FamilyTreeDNA, and the results are reported on ysearch.org, ID JKNX2.
Birth | 5 Mar 1821 | George Washington Cottrell was born on 5 Mar 1821 at Madison County, KY. In his application for a pension for his Mexican War service, George stated that he was born in Madison County KY '3 miles from Lexington.' The closest point in Madison County to Lexington is roughly 10.5 miles. It is therefore not entirely clear whether he was in fact born in Madison County (and a bit farther from Lexington than he stated) or in fact born in Fayette County. |
Note | 17 Sep 1842 | On 17 Sep 1842, a marriage license was issued to G. Washington Cotrell and Mary Gilbert in Colorado County TX and the marriage was performed on 20 Sep 1842. This marriage led to charges of bigamy and adultery against Cottrell in 1843-1844, which were ultimately dismissed when the indictment was quashed (presumably for lack of evidence or the death of a necessary witness) on 4 Mar 1844 (Book A&B, Colorado County records, p. 217). It is unknown whether this is our George at the heart of these charges or (and perhaps more likely) his father. The charge was brought in the September term 1843 and charged that George W. Cottrel being a married man having his former wife alive did unlawfully marry Mary Rodgers 'since the 20th day of September 1842'. |
Note | 24 Oct 1843 | On 24 Oct 1843, G.M. Cottrell was named overseer of a road project in Colorado County. Note that there is no proof that this is our George (note the difference in middle initials), and indeed may be his father. Our George was barely 22 years old and would have been quite young to be named an overseer. Most of the other men appointed on the same day to be road overseers were some 10-20 years older. |
Note | 1846 | A volume called 'Republic of Texas: Poll Lists For 1846' by Marion Day Mullins lists the names and counties of residence of approximately 18,000 Texas taxpayers each of whom paid a 'poll' tax of one dollar. It shows that G.W. Cotterell paid the poll tax in Wharton County, TX in 1846. This may be our G.W., since Wharton and Johnson Counties were adjacent and the boundaries somewhat flexible. However, a search of the 1850 Wharton County census does not reveal anyone by a similar name, and the most likely candidate in 1850 was some distance away in Tarrant County. Nonetheless, our George's military service between 1846 and 1848 could help explain the change of venue. |
Milit-Beg | 1 May 1846 | He began military service on 1 May 1846 at Corpus Christi, Nueces County, TX, when he enlisted for service in the Mexican War, according to a pension application he filed many years later. The pension application was rejected for want of evidence of the service in military records. |
Note | 20 Dec 1846 | On 20 Dec 1846, one George W. Cotrell was involved in an assault 'with force and arms' upon one Frederick Kayser in Colorado County TX and was indicted in March of 1847. This episode gives credence to the theory that there was another George W. Cotrell in Colorado County (our George's father perhaps) since George himself filed a pension application many years later stating that he had joined the Mexican War effort in May of 1846 and likely would not have been in Colorado County in December. |
Milit-End | Nov 1848 | He ended military service in Nov 1848 at Cordova, Mexico; he was discharged from service in the Mexican War. |
1850 Census | 4 Nov 1850 | He appeared on the 1850 U.S. census of Tarrant County, TX, at Navarro District enumerated 4 Nov 1850. Although it is not certain that this is our George, the most likely candidate on the 1850 census is this "G. W. Cotril." He was shown as age 40 (in fact he would have been 30), born KY, no occupation listed, living with the family of Archie and Nancy Robinson. It is not known whether he was in any way related to the Robinsons (mentioned as a possibility since both George and Archie were born in Kentucky). This is the most likely candidate in part because he was listed in Tarrant County only through 1853; our George appeared for the first time in Parker County in 1854. |
Note | 19 Aug 1851 | He was listed as 'Cottrell, G. W.' on the 1851 Tax Assessment List for Tarrant County TX. He paid $1.25 in tax: 50 cents as a poll tax, 50 cents as a state tax and 25 cents as a county tax. There is no indication on the tax record that he owned any property, not even a horse. |
Note | 31 Aug 1852 | He was listed as 'Cottrell, G. W.' on the 1852 Tax Assessment List for Tarrant County TX. He paid $1.25 in tax -- 50 cents as a poll tax, 50 cents as a state tax and 25 cents as a county tax. There is no indication in the tax record of ownership of any property such as land or a horse. |
Note | 4 Jun 1853 | He was listed as 'Cottrell, G. W.' on the 1853 Tax Assessment List for Tarrant County TX and, like earlier years, was not shown as owning any property such as land or a horse. He did not appear on tax lists in Tarrant County in 1854 or thereafter. |
Note | b Dec 1854 | In the 1895 'Hood County History', transcribed in 2000 by the Hood County TX Historical Document Transcription Team, author Thomas Taylor Ewell reported: 'But about this date [1853-54] quite a number of people began to come into the Long creek valley. Martin Baker and his son Joseph, ..., George Cottrell...' |
Marriage | 6 Dec 1854 | He married Martha Louisa Baker, daughter of Martin Alexander Baker and Elizabeth Buchanan, on 6 Dec 1854 at Long Creek, Parker County, TX. According to George and Louisa's Mexican War pension applications, the marriage itself took place on December 6, 1854 in what became Parker County. However, it was recorded in Johnson County (since Parker County was not yet organized) the following month, on January 29, 1855. The book containing the marriage records from Johnson County for 1855-1865 was stolen sometime after the mid-1980s. However, two transcriptions of the original records had already been made and published. One was by Weldon Hudson, and was reprinted in 2002 by the Johnson County Historical Society. The other was by the former head of the Fort Worth Historical Society and was published in their magazine 'Footprints.' |
Residence | 30 Sep 1855 | On 30 Sep 1855, George Washington Cottrell lived at Parker County, TX. The funeral memorial book for G.W.'s son, Martin Gilbert, indicates that he was born in Weatherford, Texas (county seat of Parker County). More likely he and his siblings were born in the Baker Community at Long Creek, Parker County. |
Note | 1856 | G.W. Cottrell paid a poll tax of 75 cents, plus a state of 74 cents and county tax of 37 cents on 160 acres. |
Note | 1857 | G.W. Cottrell paid a poll tax of 75 cents, plus a state of 50 cents and county tax of 25 cents. No acreage was listed for any taxpayer on the sheet where he was recorded. |
Note | 1858 | G.W. Cottrell paid a poll tax of 50 cents, plus a state of 50 cents and county tax of 25 cents. No acreage was listed for him or for most of the taxpayers on the sheet where he was recorded. |
Note | 13 Feb 1858 | On 13 Feb 1858, with his father-in-law Martin Baker, he served one of two chain carriers on the survey for the land claimed by Charles Baker (Martin's brother) at Baker Community, Long Creek, Parker County TX, as well as one of two chain carriers on the survey for the land claimed by Josiah Baker (Martin's son, George's brother-in-law). |
Note | 1859 | G.W. Cottrell paid a poll tax of 75 cents, plus a state of 50 cents and county tax of 25 cents. No acreage was listed for him or for most of the taxpayers on the sheet where he was recorded. |
Note | 1860 | G.W. Cottrell appears to have been recorded on the tax roll for 1860 (the name appears to be listed as Cantrell, and other Cantrells lived in the area but no other G.W. either before or after this tax record). No acreage was listed for him or for most of the taxpayers on the sheet where he was recorded. He was shown as owning 17 head of cattle. The tax paid is not clear. |
Note | 1861 | G.W. Cottrell paid a poll tax of 75 cents, plus a state of 50 cents and county tax of 25 cents. No acreage was listed for him or for many of the taxpayers on the sheet where he was recorded. He was shown as owning 20 head of cattle. |
Residence | 27 Sep 1861 | On 27 Sep 1861, George Washington Cottrell lived at Parker County, TX. On that date, G.W. filed an affidavit, wherein he staked his claim to 160 acres in southern Parker County. His witnesses were J.A. Baker (older brother of his wife, Louisa Baker) and Raine Johnson. Both Cottrell (whose name was spelled Cotrell on the documents) and Johnson were unable to write: both signed the affidavit with a mark. Baker was able to sign his name. The land boundaries were up against lands held by J.A. Baker, David Baker, F. Bates and Thomas Bedford. The survey chain carriers were Martin Baker (father of George's wife Louisa Baker Cottrell) and James Johnson. |
Note | 1862 | G.W. Cottrell paid a poll tax of $4.25, plus a state of $2.00 and county tax of 76 cents on 160 acres. He was shown as owning a horse and 25 head of cattle. |
Note | 1863 | G.W. Cottrell paid a poll tax of $1.25, plus a state of $4.60 and county tax of $1.16 on 160 acres. He was shown as owning two horses. |
Note | 10 Dec 1863 | On 10 Dec 1863, G.W. Cotrell's land grant for 160 acres in southern Parker County, for which he had applied on 27 Sep 1861, was issued. |
Note | 1864 | G.W. Cottrell paid a poll tax of $1.25, plus a state of $6.55 and county tax of $1.89 on 160 acres. |
Note | 1865 | G.W. Cottrell paid a poll tax of $1.25, plus a state of $2.13 and county tax of $1.63 on 160 acres. He was shown as owning 10 horses. |
Note | 31 Jul 1867 | G.W. Cottrell registered to vote in Parker County, representing that he had lived in Texas for 34 years, in Parker County and in precinct 6 for 11 years. |
1880 Census | 2 Jun 1880 | He and Martha Louisa Baker Cottrell appeared on the 1880 U.S. census of Parker County, TX, at Justice Precincts 6 & 8, enumerated 2 Jun 1880. The family last name was spelled "Cotrell." George was shown as a 59-year-old farmer, born KY; Louisa was shown as "Dottie L.", age 44, born KY. Their children Mary E., Margaret "Arby" and George W. were listed as living with them. The children were shown as Mary E., age 23, Margarett, age 16, and George W., age 12. Enumerated next door in household 9 were daughter and son-in-law Aaron and (Sarah) Jane Henson; nearby in household 12 were Louisa's brother Josiah and family including his mother-in-law Nancy Fore (mother of Nancy "Kate" Fore Baker and Mary "Polly" Fore Johnson, and grandmother of Mattie Johnson Cottrell), Josiah's son James and family in household 13, and Josiah and Louisa's uncle Charles in household 15. |
Residence | 23 Mar 1887 | On 23 Mar 1887, George Washington Cottrell lived at Long Creek, Parker County, TX. In his pension application, George W. Cottrell said he had been a resident of Parker County for 33 years (putting him in Parker County as of 1854). |
Residence | 17 Feb 1890 | On 17 Feb 1890, George Washington Cottrell lived at Iowa Park, Wichita County, TX. In a follow-up pension application, George W. Cottrell indicated his residence at Iowa Park. |

Birth | 9 May 1832 | Martha Louisa Baker, daughter of Martin Alexander Baker and Elizabeth Buchanan, was born on 9 May 1832 at Burke or Macon County, NC. The date of birth is not clear on Louisa's application for a pension arising from her husband's Mexican War service. It could be the 6th, the 8th or the 9th. In addition, although Louisa identified her place of birth in that application as Cherokee County NC, that county was not formed by 1832 when she was born. It is thus not clear whether Louisa was born in Burke County (where the family was recorded two years earlier as of the 1830 census) or in the area of Macon County that became Cherokee County (where the family was as of the 1840 census). |
1840 Census | 1840 | Based on age and gender, Martha Louisa Baker was probably included as a free white female, age 5-10, in the household of her father, Martin Alexander Baker, on the 1840 U.S. census of Cherokee County, NC. |
1850 Census | 7 Sep 1850 | Martha Louisa Baker appeared on the 1850 U.S. census of Pulaski County, KY, at Division 2, enumerated 7 Sep 1850, in the household of her parents, Martin Alexander Baker and Elizabeth Buchanan Baker. She was shown as "Margaret," age 18, born KY. |
1852 Iowa Census | 1 Jul 1852 | Based on gender, Martha Louisa Baker was probably included in the household of her father, Martin Alexander Baker, on the 1852 State Census of Columbus City, Louisa County, IA. |
Marriage | 6 Dec 1854 | Martha Louisa Baker married George Washington Cottrell on 6 Dec 1854 at Long Creek, Parker County, TX.
1880 Census | 2 Jun 1880 | Martha Louisa Baker Cottrell and George Washington Cottrell appeared on the 1880 U.S. census of Parker County, TX, at Justice Precincts 6 & 8, enumerated 2 Jun 1880. |

1910 Census | 30 Apr 1910 | Martha Louisa Baker Cottrell appeared on the 1910 U.S. census of Iowa Park, Wichita County, TX, at Justice Precinct 2, enumerated 30 Apr 1910 in the household of John H. Green and Mary Cottrell Green, her daughter and son-in-law. She was shown as a 78-year-old widow, born NC. |
Death | 17 Jan 1913 | Martha Louisa Baker Cottrell died on 17 Jan 1913 at Iowa Park, Wichita County, TX, at age 80. Her death notice appeared in the Wichita Falls Daily Times on January 24: "Mrs. Louisa Cottrell, 82 years old, died last Friday at 2:30 a.m., and was buried Saturday at 3 p.m. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. M.L. Blankenship assisted by Rev. H.B. Johnson. She leaves two sons and two daughters, nine grand children and five great grand children. She had been an invalid thirty years. She was shown as "Margarett," age 26, born TX. |
Marriage | 15 Nov 1885 | Margaret "Arby" Cottrell married Robert C. Hollis on 15 Nov 1885 at Parker County, TX. Transcriptions of this marriage record shows R.C. Hollis and "Arley" Cottrell. On review of the document itself, however, it appears that the name was always given as "Arby", which appears to have been Margaret's middle name. That Arley/Arby and Margaret are one and the same is shown by census records: in 1900, Robert C. Hollis and Margaret A. Hollis are in Wilbarger County, married 15 years; in 1910, R.C. Hollis and Arby Hollis are in Wichita County, married 24 years; in 1920, they are in Stonewall County. Cladyne Cottrell Barrett recalls stories of her father's sisters talking about their Aunt Arby who would come to the house for dinner, eat like a horse but always have to leave to go home before the washing up. |
1900 Census | 20 Jun 1900 | Margaret "Arby" Cottrell Hollis and Robert C. Hollis appeared on the 1900 U.S. census of Wilbarger County, TX, at Precinct 3, enumerated 20 Jun 1900. They had no children, and had been married 15 years.. |

Hollis appeared on the 1910 U.S. census of Iowa Park, Wichita County, TX, at Justice Precinct 3, enumerated bt 26 Apr 1910 - 30 Apr 1910. He was shown as R.C. Hollis, age 46, born TX of parents born in US, married 24 years. Arby was shown as age 45, born TX to parents both born NC. Note that no occupation is listed but merely "own income".. |
1920 Census | 1920 | Margaret "Arby" Cottrell Hollis and Robert C. Hollis appeared on the 1920 U.S. census of Aspermont, Stonewall County, TX, enumerated 1920. He was shown as R.C. Hollis, age 57, born TN of parents born TN, engaged in farming. Arby was shown as age 56, born TX of parents born TX.. |
Note | 1930 | The Stonewall County tax rolls still show property in the name of Mrs. R. Hollis as late as 1930. There is no tax record as of 1931. That may help pinpoint the date of her remarriage. |
Death | 14 Apr 1944 | Margaret "Arby" Cottrell died on 14 Apr 1944 at Aspermont, Stonewall County, TX, at age 80. She was shown as Margaret Arvy McCann, likely the wife of the informant J. M. McCann, on her death certificate, which listed the cause of death as colon cancer and senility. The certificate gave her birth date as 5 July 1871 and place as Parker County. |

The article reported that the wedding occurred at the corner of Hyde's Store in Iowa Park, while the couple sat in their buggy. The officiating judge was Justice A. L. Brubaker, and continues: 'This was the first [time he was] called upon to officiate in this line and was somewhate embarrassed, knowing that the boys would guy him. Never let a little thing like this bother you Mr. Justice.' |

Brian, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Levelland. |
Death | 31 Oct 1940 | George W. Cottrell (Jr.?) died on 31 Oct 1940 at Aspermont, Stonewall County, TX, at age 72. Why G.W. was in Aspermont at the time of his death, from pneumonia, is unknown. His sister, Margaret "Arby" Cottrell Hollis had lived in Aspermont but most likely died before 1940. His death certificate indicated he had been in Aspermont for nine days before his death. |
