Birth | 31 Mar 1881 | Addie Lee Cottrell, daughter of Martin Gilbert Cottrell and Martha H. "Mattie" Johnson, was born on 31 Mar 1881 at Bluegrove, Clay County, TX. |
Marriage | 23 Dec 1897 | Addie Lee Cottrell married Charley Emmett Harris on 23 Dec 1897 at Wichita County, TX. Addie was underage to marry in Texas -- she was only 16 -- and had to have her mother's permission. The marriage license was issued Dec. 22, 1897 and the marriage performed on Dec. 23, 1897, by County Judge J. W. Barwise. |
1910 Census | 24 May 1910 | Addie Cottrell Harris and Charley Emmett Harris appeared on the 1910 U.S. census of Wichita County, TX, at Justice Precinct 2, enumerated 24 May 1910. Emmett (spelled Emmit in the census) was shown as a 35-year-old general farmer, born TX; Addie (shown as Eddie) was age 28, born TX. The census indicates that she was the mother of six, three surviving (only three children have ever been identified as born to this marriage). Their children Gilbert William, Sam Walter (Pete) and Mattie Lucille were listed as living with them. All three children -- Bill (called Willie), age 8; Pete (called Sammy), age 6; and Lucille, age 3 -- were shown as born TX. Bill and Pete had attended school within the prior year. |
1920 Census | 6 Feb 1920 | Addie Cottrell Harris and Charley Emmett Harris appeared on the 1920 U.S. census of Iowa Park, Wichita County, TX, enumerated 6 Feb 1920. "Emmit C." was shown as a 44-year-old teamster in general hauling, born TX; Addie was shown as 37, born TX. Their children Gilbert William, Sam Walter (Pete) and Mattie Lucille were listed as living with them. The children -- listed as "Willie", age 20, a salesman in a retail auto shop; Sam, age 18, a laborer in an express office, and Lucille, 13, a schoolgirl -- were all shown as born TX. Also enumerated with the family were two lodgers, Mallory Edwards, an 18-year-old laborer in an express office (possibly a co-worker of Pete's), and Sam Canter, 35, a teamster for a general hauling firm (possibly a co-worker of Emmett's). |
1930 Census | 12 Apr 1930 | Addie Cottrell Harris and Charley Emmett Harris appeared on the 1930 U.S. census of Iowa Park, Wichita County, TX, enumerated 12 Apr 1930. This information is incorrect, as Sammie's grave is marked by a tombstone in Highland Cemetery, Iowa Park, TX. Thus the child who died in Provo must be the daughter Willie. (There is a burial record at Ancestry.com for a "Cottrell" (no first name) in the Provo Cemetery in March 1896. Gender and first name unknown.). |
