Birth | 11 Feb 1877 | John W. Cottrell, son of Martin Gilbert Cottrell and Martha H. "Mattie" Johnson, was born on 11 Feb 1877 at TX. John's obituary places his birth at Iowa Park. That is not likely. His parents were married in Parker County in 1874; the family was on the Clay County census in 1880; the family did not move to Wichita County until about 1890. It is most likely that John was born in Clay County. |
1880 Census | 2 Jun 1880 | John W. Cottrell appeared on the 1880 U.S. census of Clay County, TX, at Precinct 4, enumerated 2 Jun 1880, in the household of his parents, Martin Gilbert Cottrell and Martha H. "Mattie" Johnson Cottrell. He was shown as age 3, born TX. |

John was shown as a 31-year-old horse trader, born TX of parents born TX; Amelia was shown as Aime, age 20, born SD, married two years, mother of one. Their daughter Mattie was listed as living with them. The baby was shown as Mary, less than one month old. |
Marriage | 9 Nov 1914 | John W. Cottrell married Abigail M. Claymore on 9 Nov 1914 at Mobridge, Walworth County, SD. John listed his status as a widower at the time of the marriage. He was 32, she was 27 and not previously married. Their wedding was performed by C.E. Warner, listed as a minister. |
Census-SD State | 1915 | John W. Cottrell was recorded on the 1915 South Dakota State Census of Trail City, Carson County, SD. John was shown as age 37, born SD, of Scotch-Irish descent. His father's birthplace was shown as unknown; his mother's birthplace as KY. He could read and write, had attended common school and was married in 1914 to Abbie Claymore. |
1920 Census | 26 Jan 1920 | He and Abigail Claymore Cottrell appeared on the 1920 U.S. census of Trail City, Dewey County, SD, at Jackson Twp., enumerated 26 Jan 1920. John was shown as a 41-year-old liveryman running a livery business, born TX of a father born Scotland and a mother born OK; Abigail was shown as age 40, born SD. Mattie, his daughter from his first marriage, was enumerated with them; she was shown as age 9, born SD. John owned his property free of mortgages; he and Abigail could both read and write. |
Census-SD State | 1925 | John W. Cottrell was recorded on the 1925 South Dakota State Census of Trail City, Dewey County, SD. John was shown as age 48, born TX of parents both born KY. He could read and write, had attended common school and was married Abigail Claymore in 1915. |

His son Phillip Ellsworth was listed as living with him. Phillip was shown as a 10-year-old schoolboy, born SD. John's wife (Phillip's mother) Abigail Claymore Cottrell was a patient at the State Sanitarium being treated for tuberculosis at the time of the census. It is not clear from the census whether John had lodgers enumerated with him, or whether John and Phillip were themselves lodgers at the time of the census. |
Census-SD State | 1935 | John W. Cottrell was recorded on the 1935 South Dakota State Census of Trail City, Dewey County, SD. John was shown as "John Cotterell," a 57-year-old dealer in livestock, born TX, of a father born Ireland and mother born KY, who had lived in SD for 35 years. He was listed able to read and write, with a ninth grade education, and as having married Abigail Claymore in 1910. |
Census-SD State | 1945 | He was recorded on the 1945 South Dakota State Census of Mobridge, Walworth County, SD. John was shown as age 68, a retiree who owned his own home, born TX of parents both born TX, and who had lived in SD for 40 years. He could read and write and had finished 4th grade. Though prior censuses showed John with no religious affiliation, this census recorded him as Catholic. |
Death | 12 Apr 1951 | He died on 12 Apr 1951 at home, Mobridge, Walworth County, SD, at age 74. The cause of death was heart disease. His obituary in the Mobridge SD Tribune read: FUNERAL HELD MONDAY FOR JOHN COTTRELL Was Pioneer Resident Of This Area; Lived At Old Evarts For Time Requiem mass was held at St. Joseph's Catholic church here Monday morning for John W. Cottrell, 74, retired rancher and a pioneer resident of this area, who died at his home here late Thursday following an illness of several months duration. Services were conducted by Father Myron Martin, pastor of St. Joseph's church, and interment was made in Greenwood cemetery here with Miles Funeral home in charge of arrangements. Mr. Cottrell had been a resident of this area since 1903 when he trailed cattle up to Old Evarts -- early day cattle shipping center 10 miles southwest of Mobridge, now extinct -- for the Matador Cattle Co., and was known to stockmen throughout northern South Dakota. Cottrell was born at Iowa Park, Tex., February 11, 1877. Upon arrival in this area as a young cowhand, he continued to work for cattle companies for a number of years and following the death of Old Evarts, caused by the Milwaukee Railroad extending its line to the new town of Mobridge, he moved to the Bridge City. He was associated with Jim Nichols, another former Old Evarts resident, in the operation of a business here for a number of years, before returning to ranching. He lived at Wakpala for a time and then operated a ranch near Trail City for many years prior to moving back to Mobridge during the early part of World War II. Survivors include his widow, the former Abigail Claymore of Mobridge, whom he married November 13, 1914; a daughter, Mrs. Johnny (Mattie) Berens of Mobridge; two brothers, Clay of Virginia and Bert of Houston, Tex., and three sisters, Mrs. Ada Harris of Iowa Park, Tex., Mrs. Theo Hodges of San Antonio, Tex., and Maude of Phoenix, Ariz. A son, Lt. Phillip Cottrell, was killed in an airplane accident in California August 4, 1943. |
