Nancy [--M?--] Shew
F, b. circa 1827, d. between 1863 and 1870

Marriage | b 1859 | She married Boston Shew, son of Phillip Shew and Susannah [--M?--] Shew, b 1859 at poss AR. |
1860 Census | 13 Jun 1860 | Nancy [--M?--] Shew and Boston Shew appeared on the 1860 U.S. census of Big Springs Post Office, Franklin Township, Izard County, AR, enumerated 13 Jun 1860. Although there is no specific proof that this is our Boston Shew, the census shows a 70-year-old farm laborer born NC (we know of no other Boston Shews of that age and born NC). An apparent second wife, Nancy, was shown as 33 years old, born GA. Their son William Boston was listed as living with them. The child was one year old. It is more likely that the woman enumerated with him in 1860 was a wife rather than a niece or other relative, since yet a second boy surnamed Shew was born to her in 1863. |

Birth | 12 Jan 1859 | William Boston Shew, son of Boston Shew and Nancy [--M?--] Shew, was born on 12 Jan 1859 at prob Izard County, AR. It is not entirely certain that this child's father was Boston Shew, but that appears likely from the 1860 Izard County census records, the fact that a second child was born (a brother to this child) and the fact that both boys were sent back to Cherokee County AL to live after the apparent deaths of both Boston and Nancy before 1870. His DOB on his death certificate is shown as January 12, 1851; that is clearly an error. Similarly his POB is shown as Alabama; that is also clearly an error. The informant on the death certificate is Luther Williams (possibly a son- or grandson-in-law). |
1860 Census | 13 Jun 1860 | William Boston Shew appeared on the 1860 U.S. census of Big Springs Post Office, Franklin Township, Izard County, AR, enumerated 13 Jun 1860, in the household of his parents, Boston Shew and Nancy [--M?--] Shew. He was shown as one year old, born AR. |
1870 Census | 19 Jul 1870 | William Boston Shew appeared on the 1870 U.S. census of Twp 10, Range 8, Cherokee County, AL, enumerated 19 Jul 1870. He was shown as "B. Shoe," age 12, farm laborer, with brother "J.D. Shoe," age 8, also farm laborer, in the household of Rufus and Margaret Hale.. |
Marriage | He married Mary A. M. Hale.
1880 Census | 9 Jun 1880 | William Boston Shew and Mary Hale Shew appeared on the 1880 U.S. census of Cherokee County, AL, at Twp 10, Range 8, enumerated 9 Jun 1880. Shown as age 21, born AR of a father born VA and mother born AR. Mary Malinda was shown as "Linda," age 23, born AL of a father born SC and mother born AL.. Their children Lennie and Lona were listed as living with them. Born children -- son Lennie (sp?), age 1, and daughter Lona, age one month (born in April) -- were born as born AL. Living with the family was "Davis Shew", age 18, shown as William's brother. |
1910 Census | 2 May 1910 | William Boston Shew and Mary Hale Shew appeared on the 1910 U.S. census of Lamar County, TX, at Precinct 2, enumerated 2 May 1910. He was shown as age 50, born AR of parents both born GA, married for 31 years. Malinda was shown as age 51.. Their children Louise/Louine and Bertha were listed as living with them. Both children -- Louise/Louine, age 19, and Bertha, age 17 -- were shown as born AR. |

Birth | c 1863 | Jefferson Davis Shew, son of Boston Shew and Nancy [--M?--] Shew, was born c 1863 at prob Izard County, AR. Note that the 1910 Delta County TX census puts the date of birth as June 1861. It is not entirely certain that this child's father was Boston Shew, but that appears likely. Boston is shown with a 33-year-old woman, Nancy, on the 1860 Izard County census records and a one-year-old child William B. Both William B. and this child, his younger brother, then appear together in the Cherokee County census records in 1870 and 1880 after the apparent deaths of both Boston and Nancy before 1870. |
1870 Census | 19 Jul 1870 | Jefferson Davis Shew appeared on the 1870 U.S. census of Twp 10, Range 8, Cherokee County, AL, enumerated 19 Jul 1870. He was shown as "J.D. Shoe," age 8, farm laborer, with brother "B. Shoe," age 12, also farm laborer, in the household of Rufus and Margaret Hale.. |
1880 Census | 9 Jun 1880 | He appeared on the 1880 U.S. census of Cherokee County, AL, at Twp 10, Range 8, enumerated 9 Jun 1880 in the household of William Boston Shew and Mary Hale Shew, his brother and sister-in-law. He was shown as "Davis Shew," age 18, brother of the head of household, and born AR of a father born VA and mother born AR. |
Marriage | 2 Nov 1884 | Jefferson Davis Shew married Virginia Burcham on 2 Nov 1884 at Franklin County, AR. The marriage license was issued 1 Nov 1884 in Franklin County, listing Jeff Shew, age 23, and Jennie Burcham, age 22, both of Franklin County. The license was returned executed by Henry McElhaney, J.P., and filed 25 Nov. 1884. |
Note | Researchers in this Shew line indicate that there is another child, a daughter named Rose Ella, born 23 Jul 1897 in Indian Territory, Oklahoma. Further research is required into this child's identity.
1900 Census | 29 Jun 1900 | Jefferson Davis Shew appeared on the 1900 U.S. census of Delta County, TX, at Precinct 6, enumerated 29 Jun 1900. He was shown as age 58, a widower born Jun 1861 in AR.. His children William or John William, Virgil and Fannie were listed as living with him. The birthplace of the mother of all of the children -- Willie, age 14, born AR, Virgil, age 11, born AR, and Fannie, age 5, born TX -- was recorded as TN. There is no documentary record at this point to establish that this is the younger brother of William Boston Shew, and son of Boston and Nancy Shew, but circumstantial evidence suggests it is: the name, the place of birth, the approximate date of birth, the area of Texas (William Boston settled in next-door Lamar County and many other Shew cousins settled in Lamar County as well), all support a conclusion that this is Boston's son and William Boston's brother. |
Death | c 1918 | Jefferson Davis Shew died c 1918 at Bowie County, TX. Researchers into this line report that Jefferson Davis Shew died in Bowie County TX in 1918. There is as yet no documentary evidence for this. His name is not on the Texas death index. |

Birth | Kiziah Wright was born at prob GA.
Marriage | 12 Dec 1818 | She married William Battles, son of William Noel Battles and Elizabeth Hopper, on 12 Dec 1818 at Oglethorpe County, GA. |
Note | Sep 1824 | Kiziah Wright sued William Battles for divorce, claiming extreme cruelty, abandonment and adultery. In particular, she alleged that "for the last two years the said William Battles (having previously compelled your petitioner to leave him) hath lived and now is living in adultery with one Ann Jacobs with whom he has gone to the State of Tennessee". The case was continued from year to year, eventually being dismissed for want of prosecution in the April 1829 court term. There is nothing in the court records to suggest that William and Kiziah had any children together. |

Birth | c 1828 | Guilford Battles, son of William Battles and Ann Jacobs, was born c 1828 at AL. It is not entirely certainly that Guilford is the child of William and Ann Jacobs Battles. The evidence strongly suggests that he is, and that he was born before William and Ann were legally free to marry. |

Milit Svce | bt 1862 - 1864 | Guilford Battles served in the Confederate Army in the Civil War bt 1862 - 1864. He enlisted in Company A, 31st Alabama Infantry (the same unit as his brothers Azariah, Franklin and Lewis) on 27 Aug 1862. He was reported as a deserter as of March 10, 1864. There is no further documentary evidence of Guilford after that date. It raises the question whether he was shot as a deserter or died and was simply reported as a deserter when he could not be found. [Source: Alabama Archives] |
