The moot court case was loosely based on the real cases of State v. Reid, 194 N.J. 386 (2008), and State v. Lisa, 194 N.J. 409 (2008), raising issues as to the privacy interests of subscribers to internet service providers and as to the use of civil tort concepts as the basis for criminal liability in a manslaughter prosecution.
