On the last full day of our trip, Kacy and I had the good fortune to be able to meet our friend Ralph Lohmann in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany. Ralph works for the U.S. Government in Wiesbaden, and Freiburg was approximately halfway. It's an old university town, with a pretty little town square that had a full market going the day we were there, and an impressive cathedral.
But the best part of the day (besides visiting with Ralph) was a very long cable car ride out in the countryside up to Schauinsland, a lookout spot where you could see over the Black Forest. The weather and the time of day combined to give us a good idea why it's called the BLACK Forest.
But even the dark areas of the forest had their joys: wildflowers peeking their heads up to welcome the spring.
